La Pola synopsis

La Pola is a Colombian Novela that is a historical drama-romance based on the exploits of the legendary Apolonia Salvarrieta a mestiza (Spanish-Indian) who was a revolutionary leader during the 1810 War of Independence from Spain. The story takes place in New Granada (Colombia) and begins with Pola as a child of about 10 years of age and continues until her death about 20 years later. Although little is known of La Pola's life the writers have written this romance which begins with her meeting her life long love Alejo as children. It is love at first sight. Alejo begins her education by teaching her to read, almost unheard of for women at that time. He also explains why they cannot possibly marry due to the social constraints of that time (remember they are 10 years old at this time). His father is Espanol (a spaniard from Spain), he is a Creole (a spaniard from America), she is a mestiza ( a mixture of spaniard and indian) and one can only marry within one's own class. Her love for Alejo immediately sets her on a course to change society, free all Americans and to change history (this is a Novela afterall)! The writers explain the history of Spain and Latin America throughout this story, the causes of the Revolution, the many political parties involved with many interesting characters. Viewers comfortable with stories of the United States Revolution will see a completely different rationale for the Latin American Revolution and the many twists and turns it takes. A blazing Romance story between Pola and Alejo, and equally between her sister Catarina and her esclavo (Black slave) Juliano.
